Mr. Butt favours the best interests of children above all others. He is committed to helping parents and caregivers understand the needs of their child after separation and divorce. He is devoted to conducting a thorough assessment of your child’s family situation, understanding your child’s needs, and providing you with recommendations and a parenting plan that helps you best meet the needs of your child.

Mr. Butt is a graduate of the University of Waterloo (1988) with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a graduate of the University of Guelph (1992) with a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. He has been a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (Canadian Registry #23238) continuously since 1996. In addition, he has trained in Parent Coordination and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Mr. Butt has employment experience in a wide variety of clinical settings, and with people from diverse backgrounds. As such, he is familiar with the day-to-day challenges that parents can face. Between 1988 and 2004 he worked in a community mental health clinic, in marriage and family counselling agencies, in an addiction treatment facility, in a correctional facility, in probation and parole services, in a hospital social work department, and in an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
Since 1996 he has worked for the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, Office of the Children’s Lawyer as a Clinical Investigator conducting Parenting Time/Decision-Making (Child Custody/Access) investigations. He has continuously been appointed to the Office of the Children’s Lawyer Clinical Panel of specialists in Parenting Plans since 1998. In addition, he has maintained a private practice since 2000, completing both Parenting Plan Assessments and Voice of the Child Reports.
Mr. Butt has specialized solely in conducting Parenting Plan (Custody/Access) Assessments since 2004. In his career, he has completed in excess of 500 Parenting Plan investigations and assessments.

Mr. Butt has been repeatedly recognized and qualified by the Ontario Court of Justice, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Family Court as an Expert Witness in Parenting Time/Decision-Making disputes. Judges have commented that Mr. Butt is “eminently qualified”, “very experienced”, and conducts “very thorough”, “fair”, and “unbiased” assessments.
Mr. Butt is professionally motivated to ensure your child’s best interests are of the highest priority. To determine what those interests are, he conducts very thorough and unbiased assessments in a timely manner. As a result, the outcomes of his investigations and his recommendations are reasoned, balanced, and provide a detailed plan for how to best meet the needs of your children moving forward.
Mr. Butt has 6 years of university education in psychology and couple and family therapy, and 30 years of clinical experience working with children in context of separation and divorce. He currently works for the Ministry of the Attorney General, Office of the Children’s Lawyer where he has conducted Parenting Time/Decision-Making Assessments (Child Custody/Access) for more than 25 years.
